Sudan’s Rural Warzone States: A Horrifying Human Rights Violations

As part of the UN Human Rights Council’s 54th Regular Meeting, the horrifying testimonies regarding human rights violations committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). This Session has focused on the Darfur region, especially West Darfur state.

West Darfur state and its capital, Geneina, is the historical homeland of an African non-Arab tribe, the Masalit tribe. The Organization briefed about the “racism, genocide, and ethnic cleansing” committed against indigenous Arabs and non-Arab African communities, including enforced enlisting for children and young men, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against women and girls, especially sexual violence.

The Organization culminated their addressing by confirming that “the current status of human rights machinery is in danger” and called for a civilian-led government, not a military dictatorship or de facto military-led one.

Daily, the overall situation in Sudan worsens as the months-long conflict has no sight of ending nearly. The country is on the verge of total collapse, and a state of emergency has been declared in almost all states, including the no-war ones.
