Condemnation Statement on the Situation in Wad Medani and El Fasher, Sudan

SIHRO expresses its profound concern and unequivocal condemnation regarding the escalating violence in Wad Medani and El Fasher, Sudan. The alarming advancement of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Gezira State, particularly towards Wad Medani, has led to significant threats and harm to vulnerable civilians. These actions starkly contradict the RSF’s professed objective of protecting the people of Sudan.

The situation in Wad Medani, a crucial sanctuary for displaced individuals and a central hub for international humanitarian aid, is particularly distressing—the ongoing RSF offensive risks causing mass civilian casualties and severely disrupting essential humanitarian operations. The consequential large-scale displacement of civilians and closure of vital markets exacerbate the already dire circumstances.

Furthermore, the renewed hostilities in El Fasher, resulting in injuries to several internally displaced persons, are deeply troubling. This escalation undermines the prospects for a durable ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As an organization dedicated to upholding human rights in Sudan, SIHRO strongly urges the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to cease hostilities immediately. We call for a commitment to peace through the ongoing Jeddah Talks, emphasizing the need for a negotiated resolution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of the Sudanese populace.
In solidarity with Sudanese human rights defenders, SIHRO appeals to the international community to join in condemning these acts of violence and to support efforts towards establishing lasting peace in Sudan. All parties involved in the conflict must refrain from actions that endanger civilians, particularly in areas surrounding internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
SIHRO remains steadfast in its commitment to monitoring the situation in Sudan and advocating for protecting human rights and establishing peace.
