STATEMENT: Welcoming the Appointment of a U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan

The Sudan International Human Rights Organization (SIHRO) extends its heartfelt welcome to the appointment of Tom Perriello as the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, as announced by Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on February 26, 2024. This significant development stands as a beacon of hope for the Sudanese people, who have long endured the hardships of conflict and yearned for a future marked by peace, freedom, and justice.

In this pivotal role, Mr. Perriello is entrusted with a mission of paramount importance – to spearhead efforts that aim to cease the hostilities, ensure unrestricted humanitarian access, and champion the Sudanese people’s aspirations for a just and peaceful existence. His extensive experience in addressing peace, security, and transitional justice issues across Africa and beyond positions him as an invaluable leader in this critical endeavor.

SIHRO is particularly encouraged by Mr. Perriello’s commitment to empowering Sudanese civilian leadership and fostering a cohesive international response to bring an end to the senseless conflict, prevent further atrocities, and secure accountability for crimes already committed. His distinguished career, which spans across various branches of government, international institutions, and non-governmental organizations, brings a promise of progress and a new chapter for Sudan.

We also wish to express our deep appreciation for Ambassador John Godfrey’s distinguished service and significant contributions towards advancing peace and justice in Sudan. As he concludes his term, we welcome the interim appointment of former Ambassador Daniel Rubinstein, confident in his ability to collaborate effectively with Special Envoy Perriello and the dedicated team within the Bureau of African Affairs.

SIHRO stands in solidarity with the international community in supporting Special Envoy Perriello’s efforts towards building a brighter, more peaceful future for Sudan. Together, we are committed to realizing the rights and aspirations of the Sudanese people.

With hope and determination,

The Sudan International Human Rights Organization
