Urgent Call for Restoration of Communications in Sudan: A Humanitarian Imperative Amidst Escalating Conflict

The Sudan International Human Rights Organization (SIHRO) is deeply concerned about the recent developments in Sudan, where the ongoing conflict has taken a turn for the worse with the unjust and alarming decision to cut off mobile networks and communications across the country. This action constitutes a severe violation of human rights, stripping the Sudanese people of their ability to communicate, access information, and carry out essential daily activities.

Mobile networks are the lifeline of modern society, crucial for almost all life-saving activities. In Sudan, where the conflict has already imposed immense hardships, the ability to use mobile networks to buy food, pay for transportation, purchase medicine, and other critical services is more than a convenience—it is a necessity. Many of these transactions rely on E-banking systems, which are now inaccessible due to the disruption of mobile and internet services.

Among the most affected by this communication blackout is the healthcare sector, particularly the efforts of the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA). SAPA operates the largest “virtual hospital” in the region, providing indispensable medical advice and consultations through the Internet. The cutting off of mobile networks complicates their noble efforts and outright deprives countless individuals in dire need of the life-saving services that the virtual hospital offers.

In light of these distressing events, SIHRO urgently calls on the belligerent parties involved in the conflict—the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—to not allow the heat of battle to overshadow the grave humanitarian crisis unfolding across the nation. We implore both sides to adhere to the obligations agreed upon in the Jeddah Talks and to stand by their commitments to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The restoration of communication services is not merely a technical issue; it is a humanitarian imperative that can significantly mitigate the suffering of the Sudanese people during these trying times.

SIHRO reiterates its unwavering commitment to advocating for human rights and pursuing a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. We stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people and all organizations working on the ground to alleviate their suffering. The international community must not remain silent in the face of these egregious human rights violations. Together, we must work towards restoring peace, dignity, and fundamental human rights to the people of Sudan.

In solidarity,

Sudan International Human Rights Organization (SIHRO)
